Advantages and disadvantages of using computers
Basic concepts of computing · about 4 min
Computers transform how we work, learn and communicate — but they also carry costs and risks. A balanced answer always shows both sides.
Key points (advantages)- Speed and accuracy: repetitive calculations done in seconds without tiring.
- Storage: enormous amounts of data in a small space, easy to search.
- Communication: email, messaging and video calls across the world.
- Automation: dangerous or boring jobs done by machines.
- Cost of equipment, software, electricity and maintenance.
- Job losses where automation replaces people.
- Health issues: eye strain, poor posture (ergonomics), inactivity.
- Security and privacy risks: viruses, data theft, scams.
- Dependence: when systems fail, work can stop entirely.
EXAM TIP
"discuss" questions usually want at least two advantages AND two disadvantages, each explained in a sentence — a bare list loses marks.
